The best room in the property is usually outside it.
Landscape design and outdoor construction — terraces, courtyards, gardens, poolsides and outdoor kitchens, planned for shade, drainage, planting and the way people actually sit outside.
In this climate, outdoor space is not decoration. It is usable floor area.
Most outdoor space in Ghanaian properties is under-used, and the reason is almost always the same: there is nowhere comfortable to sit at the times of day people would actually want to be outside. Too much sun at four in the afternoon, nowhere to put a glass, standing water after heavy rain, and lighting that stops at the back door.
Landscape design solves those in that order. Orientation and shade first, then levels and drainage, then surfaces, then planting, then lighting, then furniture. Handled properly, an ordinary yard becomes the part of the house the family uses most — and, for hospitality clients, the part that sells covers.
Handled as an afterthought, it becomes an expensive area of grass nobody visits.
Outdoor scope.
Landscaping here means construction as much as planting. Both are in scope; both are designed before either is built.
[VERIFY] final inclusions Scope is confirmed per project after survey. This list describes what this service line normally covers, not a fixed package.
- Site analysis — orientation, sun path, prevailing wind, existing trees, levels and drainage behaviour.
- Landscape concept and masterplan for the grounds as a whole.
- Terraces, patios, decking, paths and hard landscaping in stone, tile, concrete or timber.
- Shade structures: pergolas, canopies, screens and planted shade.
- Planting design and soft landscaping, selected for local climate and realistic maintenance.
- Irrigation planning and drainage falls, so water goes where it should. [VERIFY] irrigation systems supplied or coordinated
- Outdoor kitchens, bars, fire pits and built-in seating.
- Pool surrounds, coping and poolside furniture. Pool construction and plant are coordinated with specialist contractors. [VERIFY]
- Exterior and landscape lighting design, including path, feature and security layers.
- Outdoor furniture — made or specified — in materials that tolerate sun and rain.
- Boundary treatment: walls, fencing, gates and screening.
Designed for harmattan and heavy rain, not for a European garden magazine.
Specification for outdoor work in Ghana is unforgiving. Timber that is not the right species and finish will grey and split. Surfaces without correct falls will pond. Planting chosen for looks alone will demand irrigation nobody maintains. We specify for the two seasons the property actually experiences, and we tell clients what each choice will need in maintenance before they choose it.
Outdoor work is judged two rainy seasons later.
An outdoor room photographs well on the day it is finished. What matters is how it looks after two wet seasons and two harmattans — whether the deck has silvered and split, whether the paving has settled, whether the planting filled in or died back.
We specify for that horizon and tell you what each choice will demand in maintenance, so the decision is made with the upkeep visible rather than discovered later.
How outdoor projects run.
Site walk and analysis
We walk the grounds, note orientation, shade, drainage and existing planting, and establish how you want to use the space and at what times of day.
Landscape design
Masterplan, hard landscaping layout, planting plan, lighting scheme and furniture schedule, with materials shown as samples.
Construction and planting
Groundworks, drainage, hard landscaping, structures, lighting installation and then planting — in that sequence, so nothing new is dug up to install something that should have come first.
Establishment and handover
Furniture placed, lighting commissioned at night, and a maintenance schedule handed over. Planting needs an establishment period and we tell you what it requires.
Where outdoor work pays for itself.
Private residences
Families who have run out of comfortable indoor space and have an unused yard, or owners preparing a property to be lived in properly rather than merely maintained.
Restaurants and bars
Outdoor covers are the cheapest floor area you will ever add. Shade, lighting, surface and furniture decide whether they trade after four o’clock.
Hotels and short-lets
Grounds and poolside are photographed more than any interior. For short-let properties in particular, the outdoor image is frequently what converts the booking.
The part clients underestimate.
Groundworks and drainage are the least visible and most expensive part of an outdoor project, and they are where the money has to go first. A beautiful terrace on unresolved levels will fail. We would rather deliver a smaller, correctly built outdoor room than a large one that ponds in the first heavy rain — and we will show you where the budget is actually going before you commit to it.
Outdoor and landscaping questions.
Do you build swimming pools?
We design and build pool surrounds, coping, terraces, lighting and poolside furniture, and we coordinate pool construction and plant with specialist contractors. Pool structure and water engineering are not carried out in house. [VERIFY] confirm specialist pool partners
Do you maintain gardens after they are built?
Planting is handed over with a written maintenance schedule. Whether Manko Living provides ongoing grounds maintenance as a service is to be confirmed rather than assumed. [VERIFY]
Can you work with the trees and planting already on site?
Wherever possible, yes — mature planting is an asset that cannot be bought back. We survey what exists, identify what is worth keeping, and design around it. Removal is a last resort and is always discussed first.
What outdoor materials actually last here?
That is a specification conversation rather than a single answer, and it depends on exposure, budget and how much maintenance you are realistically prepared to do. We present options with their upkeep requirements attached, so the trade-off is visible before it is chosen.
Do you handle outdoor lighting?
Lighting design — path, feature, security and ambient layers — is part of the landscape scope. Electrical installation is carried out by qualified trades coordinated under our programme.
Can outdoor work be phased?
Yes, and often it should be. Groundworks, drainage and hard landscaping come first; planting, lighting and furniture can follow later. We will sequence the phases so nothing built in phase one is disturbed by phase two.
Walk us round the outside.
Photographs of the grounds, roughly which way they face, and what you wish you could do out there. That is enough for a first conversation about what the space could become.
Consultations begin with a site visit and a conversation about how the space needs to work. Scope, drawings and cost follow from that — never before it.
